Photo by @BrianSkerry A newborn, baby beluga whale swims in front of his mom in the shallow coastal waters in the Canadian high-arctic. Beluga families travel hundreds of miles each summer to spend time at their ‘summer playground’ - a location where a river flows into the sea. Beluga whales are highly social, and have complex dialects and ancestral traditions. Coverage from my new book, ’Secrets of the Whales’ - available now, wherever books are sold. Secrets of the Whales, an Original Documentary Series from @NatGeo , is streaming this Earth Day, April 22, on @DisneyPlus . Photo by @BrianSkerry Humpback whales burst from the ocean surface, mouths open in a display of bubblenet-feeding in Alaska. Several whales, sometimes as many as 12 or more, make a net of bubbles around herring, corralling them into a tight baitball, making for more efficient feeding. Each whale has a specific job during the process. This is an example of communal feeding, as members of different families work together to feed. Old friends gathering for dinner every summer .. For 3 years I returned to the sea to pursue my passion for whales and tell stories about their culture and their lives. The result is ‘Secrets of the Whales.’ Disney+ original series Secrets of the Whales, from @NatGeo , is streaming this Earth Day, April 22, on @DisneyPlus . In addition, my book, Secrets of the Whales, goes on sale April 6 and is available for pre-order now. My work on whales will also be featured in the May issue of National Geographic magazine, The Ocean Issue, available online on April 15. 🏄🏽‍♂️ Surf’s up! Here comes the high tide... and with it soon, surely at least a few beluga whales. We’ve now been seeing Alaska’s critically endangered belugas on each high tide this spring here in our backyard of the Turnagain Arm of upper Cook Inlet since April 24th. They are still very much in stealth mode and can be tricky to see, often only spotted in small groups and blending in seamlessly with the muddy, churning waves. But they are definitely here! #cookinletbelugas #belugasonthebrink #secretsofthewhales
Photographing Alaska’s critically endangered Cook Inlet belugas can be tricky... especially when the whales are still in springtime stealth mode! Here’s a clip from this morning that shows you just how quick our field photographer @smilingwhalesphoto has to be to capture them on camera. Did you see the beluga surface for a split-second, too? #cookinletbelugas #secretsofthewhales #belugasonthebrink #blinkandyoumissit
I love #Beluga #Whales #SecretsOfTheWhales @disneyplusbr #NationalGoegraphic - Photo by @BrianSkerry A beluga whale poses perfectly for this portrait the chilly waters off of Nova Scotia, Canada. Belugas are a highly social species, often called the ‘canaries of the sea’ for their diverse repertoire of whistles, clicks and other sounds. They are also known to mimic sounds that they hear, including boat engines and other sounds. Though these gorgeous creatures live in the Arctic, they frequently move into Sub-Arctic waters as well. They are one of the only whale species capable of turning their necks in all directions. #SeaLife #Baleia #BelugaWhales #BaleiaBeluga #BoaNoite #GoodNight #BuonaNotte #BonneNuit

Photo by @BrianSkerry The May issue of National Geographic Magazine @natgeo features my cover story about whale culture. Wonderfully written by @craigwelch I created this story based on the latest science, which reveals that whales have complex societies and cultures. As whale biologist @shanegero explains, “Behavior is what we do, culture is how we do it.” For example, most people eat food with utensils. This is behavior. But whether we use chopsticks or knives and forks is culture. Within individual species, whales have ancestral traditions and they pass these on to their offspring. My hope in producing this project was to help people see the ocean, and our planet, through the eyes of whale culture. And I believe this can be a game changer, because once we understand this, it creates a new perception of our connection to the natural world. ’Secrets of the Whales’ was the most ambitious effort of my career, involving years of research and then three years of fieldwork. The result is this 40-page cover story, my new book and the Disney+ original series Secrets of the Whales, from @NatGeo , that begins streaming this Earth Day, April 22, on @DisneyPlus . Photo by @BrianSkerry A young beluga whale swims beneath the tail of an adult in shallow coastal waters of in the Canadian high-arctic. Beluga families travel hundreds of miles each summer to spend time in this location where the water is shallow and slightly warmer where they give birth and play. Beluga whales are highly social, with complex dialects and ancestral traditions. This most ambitious project of my career involved 2 years of research and 3 years in the field with whales. My goal was to tell stories about their culture and their lives. Photo by @BrianSkerry A happy sperm whale calf swims near the surface in the waters of the Eastern Caribbean. Sperm whale families are matrilineal and are led by the older, wiser females of the group. Female calves are especially important for their future. This calf was born to a family that hadn’t produced females in quite some time. With the blessing of the researchers that study these animals, I named the little whale Hope. This most ambitious project of my career involved 2 years of research and 3 years in the field with whales. My goal was to tell stories about their culture and their lives. The result is ‘Secrets of the Whales.’ Disney+ original series Secrets of the Whales, from @NatGeo , is streaming this Earth Day, April 22, on @DisneyPlus . 📸 @nansenweber & Gretchen Freund @natgeo #secretsofthewhales #lessecretsdesbaleines #belugas #belugawhales #cunningham #cunnignhaminlet #arctic #arctique #Canada #social #culture #marinelife #marinebiology #biologie #mammiferes #mammiferesmarins #cetaces #cetaceans #arcticocean #nature #wonder #animal #ocean #cestassez

Photo by @BrianSkerry An Orca calf swims with two adults through chilly seas filled with fish scales in the waters of the Norwegian arctic. Orca come here to feed on a type of fish called herring. The Orca use communication and coordination to gather the fish into ‘bait balls’ then swim through, stunning the herring with their tails before eating them. Creating unique feeding strategies demonstrates highly cognitive behavior and teaching these things to their calves is an element of whale culture. Over the last several years I traveled to nearly two dozen locations worldwide, working with multiple species of whales to understand more about their unique cultures.
