In partnership with local communities, governments, and NGOs, the @natgeopristineseas initiative works to support the protection of our oceans for the benefit of nature and humanity. To date, the team’s scientific research, media outreach, and policy efforts have helped to create 23 marine reserves around the globe. @macfound #100andChange
Today is the day. At 3pm CT, we’ll be hosting a live event featuring the six finalists in our #100andChange competition and then announcing the $100 million recipient. 🏆 Watch it live on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.con/macfound.
I am someone who isn’t much emotional to catch feelings quickly but when I was maintaining my buoyancy to take this photo, I had goosebumps and I also had a nervous feeling. I was saddened to see all these dead corals which looks like a graveyard. I’m still wondering how reef conservationists and the government who get big funding are taking action to save our coral reefs and protect Mauritius from Climate Change. If the authorities are not responding correctly, don’t you think it’s our duty to take action and protect our ocean in and out of water? 50-80% of the oxygen production comes from the ocean and if the Oceans Dies, We Die! . . #GenGeo #30X30 #100andchange #Mauritius #reefconservation #oceanlife #oceanconservation #earthfocus #saveourocean #scubadiving #yourshotphotographer #natgeo #insidenatgeo #ocean #natgeopristineseas #ngphotocamp #photooftheday #plasticpollution #mauritiusparadise #earthpix #projectaware #PADI #planet #discoverglobe #earthofficial #explore #marineprotectedareas

Photo by @enricsala / Southern Line Islands: The ocean is like a bank account, where for generations we have been withdrawing resources faster than they can regenerate. No-take marine reserves can bring back ocean life. They replenish fisheries, boost the local economy, and safeguard biodiversity. @macfound #100andChange For more about the benefits of ocean protection, follow @EnricSala and the National Geographic Society’s @natgeopristineseas project.
I have seen marine life recover spectacularly in marine reserves, and I’ve seen places go from degraded to almost pristine in just a few years. When the fish come back, they help replenish the fishing grounds around them and bring tourism that creates jobs and generates revenue.  But it’s not just the people living near the sea, it’s all of humanity that benefits from protecting the ocean and restoring its vitality. When we give nature the space to thrive, we are creating a better future for our world and everything living in it. @macfound #100andChange 📸 Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica
Coral reefs are part of our world heritage but they are in danger. Climate change and plastic pollution is threatening the future of our reef. We need and it is our duty to protect our oceans because we are all connected and it is also our greatest life support system. It is estimated that in the next 30-40 years, our coral reefs might become extinct. There’s still time to protect our oceans. We need to work hard together to advance conservation and we should always remember when we are protecting our oceans, we’re protecting our future. #GenGeo #30x30 . . #saveouroceans #oceanconservation #100andchange #Mauritius #saveourreefs #reefconservation #oceanlife #earthfocus #scubadiving #natgeo #insidenatgeo #ocean #natgeopristineseas #ngphotocamp #photooftheday #plasticpollution #mauritiusparadise #earthpix #projectaware #PADI #planet #discoverglobe #earthofficial #explore #agameoftones #artofvisuals #marineprotectedareas

Watch the moment Community Solutions learned we’d been awarded the $100 million @macfound #100andChange grant. Kat Johnson (bottom right box) summed it up best: “FWIW, my jaw is still on the floor and I am still crying.” We’re still buzzing from the big news last night! 😭‼️
When I was diving, I came across this big thickets of Staghorn coral. It is extremely sad to see coral reefs bleaching and dying on our watch. There are approximately 160 species of staghorn corals worldwide. These corals have a lifespan of 100 years and they can grow up to 8 feet. The greatest threat to staghorn coral is ocean warming, which causes the corals to release the algae that live in their tissue and provide them food, usually causing death. Other threats to staghorn coral are ocean acidification (decrease in water pH caused by increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere) that makes it harder for them to build their skeleton and unsustainable fishing practices that deplete the herbivores (animals that feed on plants) that keep the reef clean. . . #GenGeo #30X30 #100andchange #Mauritius #reefconservation #oceanlife #oceanconservation #earthfocus #saveourocean #scubadiving #yourshotphotographer #natgeo #insidenatgeo #ocean #natgeopristineseas #ngphotocamp #photooftheday #plasticpollution #mauritiusparadise #earthpix #projectaware #PADI #planet #discoverglobe #earthofficial #explore #agameoftones #artofvisuals #marineprotectedareas
